Clackmannanshire Council Archives
Clackmannanshire
Clackmannanshire Council Archives cares for and provides access to the historical records relating to the county. Many of these records were previously held by the Central Region Archives Department at Stirling. Our archive contains the records of the former County of Clackmannan, Clackmannan District, the old Alloa, Alva, Dollar and Tillicoultry Burgh Councils and the Alloa and Hillfoots District Councils.
Within these holdings there are major runs of material such as local authority minutes, letter books, school log books and Valuation and Assessment Rolls.
The repository also contains a number of private deposits of material from local organisations, families, individuals and businesses. There is a substantial body of material from the former Patons & Baldwins textile operation and the Johnstone of Alva estate papers is another major collection.
The Archives are housed in the Speirs Centre, which was built as Alloa Public Baths & Gymnasium and gifted to the town by John Thomson Paton, Chairman of John Paton, Son & Co. Ltd, Kilncraigs Mill. It was designed by John James Burnet, Son & Campbell and opened on 29th April 1898. The Public Baths closed in late 1986 and on 13th January 1989 the building reopened as the Speirs Centre, in memory of the Clackmannanshire boxer Tommy Speirs. It closed again in 2012 and reopened on 18th October 2014, with a new entrance designed by LDN Architects. It provides a range of services, including a library; customer services; registrars; local and family history centre; county archives and exhibitions on the history and heritage of the county.
There will be guided tours of the archive store, which is not normally open to the public. A display of archive and local history information relating to the railway and postal services in Clackmannanshire will link with the 2024 theme.
