St Fillan's Church, Aberdour
West Fife
Last year St Fillan’s celebrated its 900th Anniversary, dating from 1123 it is most probably the oldest active church in Scotland.
St Fillan’s is one of the finest examples of simple Norman architecture in Scotland and has been referred to as ’a miniature cathedral’. It is admired for its simple beauty and serenity and sits in its own graveyard with views over the Forth to Edinburgh.
The nave and chancel date from 1123. This was enlarged in the 15th century by the addition of a side aisle, and in the 17th by a small transept aisle. The church fell into disrepair in the 18th century and was restored in 1926.
Various artefacts and church silver, including Captain Morgan’s 'Pirate' cup, will be on display and there will also be a description of the stained glass windows and information on the more interesting gravestones available.
There will be information available about the history of the church and informal guided tours will take place throughout the day with a guide book available to purchase.
Parking is available close by at the station car park.
