West Fife

In Person

The Robert Stevenson Light Tower, built in 1817 by the grandfather of RLS, was one of the first Light Towers constructed in Scotland. Its claim to fame is that it is the world’s only operational oil lit light tower. The light safely guided the Forth ferries until they ceased operating in 1960. The tower was then later carefully restored and in 2010 it was reopened by the Princess Royal.

By prior arrangement, and a £20 donation, you can also become part of the tower’s history by lighting the Argand oil lamp and receiving a Certificate of Competence as an Honorary Keeper of the Light. To book for lighting the lamp simply contact the North Queensferry Heritage Trust, NQHTinfo@gmail.com for details.

A self-guided trail around the Forth Bridge area is provided at the North Queensferry Heritage Trust Centre.
