Overtoun House

New

14 September 2024 (10:00 - 16:00)

West Dunbartonshire

In Person

In 1859 James White bought the estate then commissioned James Smith to build him a country house in the Scotts Baronial style. James White was a wealthy industrialist from Rutherglen in Glasgow. His purpose was to build a retreat from the gloomy, polluted streets of the city for him and his family. In 2000 Bob and Melissa Hill approached West Dunbartonshire Council to lease Overtoun House as a residential care facility for women in crisis.

This is a centre for hope and healing. This large historic house set within an extensive estate is an extraordinary place to visit. While much is private due to the nature of the work of this charity, the most impressive rooms on the ground floor are open to the public for part of the week and include a tearoom.
