Shetland
Cullivoe Up Helly Aa is one of the many viking fire festivals that take place all over Shetland during January and February. The Cullivoe Galley shed is the centre of operations for the Yell’s festival and is where the Jarl and their squad meet, plan and build a galley before it is burnt as part of the festival.
In recent years the Cullivoe Galley Shed has had an exhibition of past events throughout the summer months. For Doors Open Days the Cullivoe Galley Shed will be reopening its exhibition for one day only, along side the current preparations for the 2025 Up Helly Aa. There will also be a chance to speak to squad members and maybe even the first ever female Jarl in Cullivoe.
Up Helly Aa is an integral link to the past history of Shetland and a time when we connect to the Viking ancestry of the islands and how their travel to Shetland influenced our lives today.
