Great Tapestry of Scotland
Scottish Borders
The Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre opened in 2021 in Galashiels town centre. The building integrates the town's impressive Post Office building with the new purpose-built Tapestry Gallery.
For Doors Open Day 2024 we are excited to be running a one-day pop up exhibition to delve into the Stitchers Diaries for one of the first times. During the creation of the tapestries the stitching groups involved were all encouraged to keep diaries detailing their real, lived experiences of the creation of one of the most ambitious community projects ever undertaken in Scotland and we are delighted to offer the opportunity discover the story of Scotland’s stitchers - in their own words.
Alongside this you can gain free entry to our temporary exhibition “Drawing the Great Tapestry of Scotland” curated by the artist behind the project, Dr Andrew Crummy, MBE. This exhibition includes some of the original drawings of the Tapestry – on display for the first time since they were drawn 13 years ago.
We are also delighted to be able to offer free drop-in craft session, available for adults and children, teaching the skills of sewing and embroidery inspired by the Great Tapestry of Scotland!
