Hoy Heritage Centre

Orkney

Based in the island of Hoy in Orkney, Hoy Heritage Centre is a community run venue sharing the stories of Hoy with visitors and locals. We are housed in a former kirk and our community is the parish formerly served by Hoy Kirk. We hold exhibitions and events, we house a natural history browsing library and we are establishing a community archive.

Take a journey to Rackwick in Hoy, one of the poet George Mackay Brown’s favourite places.

Between those strong red cliffs

The hidden valley of light.

Filmmaker Mark Jenkins brings together images of Rackwick with voices past and present, using a slow cinema approach to focus on the aural experience. The film was created in response to ‘The Hidden Valley of Light’, one of the ‘Tales o Hoy’ podcast episodes developed for the Hoy Heritage Centre. The full series of podcasts can be found online, each accompanied by photos and an interactive map of the places mentioned. Originally commissioned for Orkney International Science Festival we are delighted to be showing this again for Doors Open Days which coincides with this year’s Orkney International Science Festival.
