Guided coach tour of Three Hills - Inverclyde Tourist Group

28 September 2024 (10:00 - 12:00)

Inverclyde

In Person

This two-hour bus tour, guided by Inverclyde Tourist Group for Doors Open Day 2024, takes in some of Inverclyde's famous beauty spots. Starting at Clyde Square, in the heart of Greenock’s Historic Quarter, with a brief talk about the Municipal Buildings, Mid Kirk, and William Street. The tour then proceeds along Cathcart Street heading for Auchmountain Glen, passing the historic St Laurence’s church. The first photo stop is at Knocknairshill, where visitors can admire the vista of Greenock and Port Glasgow.

The tour continues to the picturesque Greenock Esplanade, where many famous buildings, previously owned by shipping magnates and wealthy traders, can be admired. It proceeds past Fort Matilda and Battery Park, highlighting their roles in the Napoleonic Wars and the World Wars. Entering Gourock, the tour drives up the side of Gourock Park, with the next photo stop at Tower Hill to enjoy views over the Clyde.

From Tower Hill, the tour heads back towards Greenock, passing the Inverclyde Royal Hospital and going through Fancy Farm to Grieve Road. The third photo stop is on Lyle Hill, with the Free French Monument, where there is a superb view of the area, weather permitting. The tour then continues back into Greenock, passing through the affluent West End area and returning to the starting point at Clyde Square.

The guided coach tour links to the importance of the River Clyde to Inverclyde’s growth and prosperity, starting from fishing and growing to shipbuilding and now the importance of bringing international tourists to Scotland by cruise ships.
