University of Edinburgh: Murchison House, Student Permaculture Garden
Edinburgh
An award-winning architectural creation designed for the British geological Survey, Murchison House now includes teaching and self-learning areas, College offices, Information Services and the University's commercialisation arm, Edinburgh Innovations.
The structural design and plan deliberately references naturally occurring geological formations, particularly those of basalt rock and crystalline forms. The horizontal bands of bellying windows, with units jutting out at seemingly irregular angles are suggestive of layers of strata, or rock. The Permaculture Garden is situated at the rear of Murchison House, and will be signposted.
The King’s Building Permaculture Garden is a student-led project allowing the University and other communities to connect around a growing space at the rear of Murchison House. The design of the garden and the organisation of the social aspects are all inspired by the Permaculture principles, design methods that create sustainable environments. More information can be found on our Blog.
Students will be available between noon and 4pm at the garden, to give tours and to explain the principles behind the garden’s design.
