In Person

St Michael and All Saints Church is a Grade A listed building, designed by the Edinburgh Architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (National Portrait Gallery and McEwan Hall), and built in 1867. The Narthex and south-west tower were added in 1875-76, and the Lady Chapel with the organ above, designed again by Anderson, were built in 1897. There are fine altar pieces by William Burges (1867) and C E Kemp (1889), and excellent stained glass by William Wailes, Clayton Bell & Ninian Comper. Of particular note is the 16th/17th century Spanish Pulpit with carved allegorical figures (Hope Justice etc) at the corners. Originally known as All Saints, it became St Michaels and All Saints with the closure of the former church in Hill Square in 1965. The name and some of the ornate furnishings came to Tollcross, along with the congregation.
