Granton Art Centre is a fascinating art storage facility holding over 5,000 artworks from Scotland’s world-renowned national art collection which are currently not on display to the public. Safely stored away in a climate-controlled space in North Edinburgh, the centre holds almost enough art to fill a 7-a-side football pitch. Looked after by the National Galleries of Scotland, these artworks belong to the people of Scotland and are part of our cultural heritage.

Activities 

Come and explore behind the scenes of Scotland’s national art collection at Granton Art Centre. This doors open day join us to explore the theme of ‘Routes, Networks and Connections’.

With over 5,000 artworks not on display in our galleries, uncover the often unseen art of Scotland. 

Discover how we store enough art to fill a 7-a-side football pitch worth of art! This is also a chance to find out more about the exciting plans for our new facility, The Art Works. Learn more about how this facility will deliver a community-focussed and sustainable space to care for, research and share Scotland’s renowned art collection. We’ll also be joined by our neighbour’s granton: hub with information and materials about the Granton Archive Project (GAP), bringing the history of the local area alive.

For the last slot of the day, visitors are welcome to spend time sketching artworks from the collection (materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sketchbook if you prefer).  

Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult.
