Merchiston Tower - Edinburgh Napier University

28 September 2024 (10:30 - 15:30)

Edinburgh

In Person

This 15th-century tower stands at the heart of Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston Campus. The tower was the birthplace John Napier (the University's namesake), inventor of logarithms and who was born here in 1550. Visit the tower and see a seventeenth-century plaster ceiling rediscovered during restoration work and marvel at the boardroom's 16th century painted ceiling. The ceiling originally from Prestongrange House has been referred to as the best surviving example of what was known as Antique Work and is thought to be the earliest dated specimen in Scotland of painted Renaissance decoration.

Guided information, leaflets/notes, and children's colouring activities provided. Please note that access to the tower is limited using a turnpike staircase.
