Elie Parish Church

New

7 September 2024 (12:00 - 16:00)

East Fife

In Person

An earlier church, endowed by William Scott of Ardross, built here during the post Reformation period, opened for worship on 17th April 1639. The current building is B Listed and is an example of 'T' plan churches in which the layout gave more emphasis to the preacher with the pulpit centred on the long south wall of the church. Opposite the pulpit is the Laird’s loft with an associated family vault beneath it. The clock tower is not part of the original church, being added in 1726 by Sir John Anstruther.

The body of the church was rebuilt in 1831 and has had further alterations made including the installation of some high quality stained glass windows, which significantly were designed by Edward Burne-Jones, a Pre-Raphaelite painter and designer who worked with William Morris in founding his Arts and Crafts studio.

The Elie and Earlsferry History Society will be offering guided history walks around the area, starting from the church.

Elie Parish Church will no longer be used for worship due to The Church of Scotland’s intention to dispose of the building.  This gives us the opportunity to look at how this historically important landmark can be repurposed for a new lease of life. The Elie Church Community Group is looking to see if the community can repurpose the building for the benefit of the whole community.

Doors Open Days is an excellent opportunity to allow people to come and look around the building to see what it has to offer. On display will be drawings of how the space could look when repurposed, with large plans available for people to provide their own input and ideas on, and some information on a possible community business structure.
