Cambo Gardens
East Fife
Doors open at the Cambo Mausoleum. Explore the designed landscape of Cambo starting at the Cambo Mausoleum and discover some of the stories of the Erskine’s who have made Cambo their home for over 300 years.
Cambo Walled Garden and The Stables Visitor Centre are managed by charity Cambo Heritage Trust and form part of the listed Designed Landscape of Cambo Estate and for the Doors Open Days we are offering guided tours throughout the weekend.
The designed landscape at Cambo dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is attributed to Thomas Erskine, 9th Earl of Kellie (1745-1828). The 9th Earl had been a successful merchant in Sweden and on returning to Cambo in the 1790s set about improving the estate by extending the old Cambo House, enclosing the farmland, and creating two model farms, pleasure walks and gardens. The site includes structures traditionally associated with the policies of a country house, such as the mausoleum, stables, walled garden, dovecote and lodges, and six cast- and wrought-iron bridges which span the burn .
The Stables were redeveloped by architects Page/Park in 2017 to provide visitor facilities whilst sensitively retaining all historic features. The Visitor Centre houses a heritage exhibition charting the history of Cambo Estate alongside the café, shop and learning hub.
