Dundee
Dance for the curious, made in Scotland. We are Scottish Dance Theatre.
We started out as grassroots community company in 1986 and we are now Scotland’s flagship contemporary dance company.
We are committed to the art form we love and the people we share it with. And we don’t shy away from the creative tension between high art and social responsibility.
We embrace our roots in the city of Dundee, a small city in the Northeast of Scotland with a proud industrial heritage, surrounded by breathtaking nature and farming and fishing communities.
We are outward looking. We collaborate with artists from all over the world and take our work everywhere we can: from remote village halls in the Scottish Highlands to opera houses in South America. From art festivals in Europe to local schools, prisons and shopping centres.
Digital Events
合[Hé] by Scottish Dance Theatre & Yabin Studio
合[Hé],is a co-created digital dance work by Yabin Studio and Scottish Dance Theatre, which premiered at the 2021 China Contemporary Dance Biennale.
In this international collaboration across art forms, choreographers Joan Clevillé and Yabin Wang joined creative forces with digital artist Genevieve Reeves and the dancers from Scottish Dance Theatre and Yabin Studio to create a visual tapestry exploring our relationship with nature and the environment.
Taking inspiration from the five phases of Wuxing in Chinese traditional philosophy (Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth), the dancers interact with natural and urban environments, building intangible bridges across dance disciplines and the landscapes of Dundee and Shanghai, Scotland and China.
As we watch the dancers’ bodies rise and fall, we witness the cycles of growth and decay in nature, the seasons following one another, reminding us of the invisible connections that sustain our environment and the exquisite fragility of the Universe’s dance.
