City Road Allotments

Dundee

City Road Gardens Association is an allotment area in the heart of Dundee. We offer plots to rent to members of the local community at an affordable rate to enable them to grow their own fruit, vegetables, and flowers, to build community ties and friendships, and to help promote mental health well-being. We work with other local community groups to give them access to our space to facilitate their activities and provide regular donations of fruits and vegetables to the local community in our free food box at the main site gate.

Allotments have been in existence for hundreds of years possibly since Anglo Saxon times (National Allotment Society). The significance of allotments grew during the industrial revolution when it became increasingly important for people to be given land to be able to grow their own food for their health and wellbeing. The Smallholding and Allotment Act (1908) and the Settlement Facilities Act in 1919 meant that allotments became increasingly available to everyone, assisting returning service men after the First World War. The City Road allotment site was developed follow the action of a local resident in 1946 and has continued to engage members of the local community in growing produce ever since. Growing produce on an allotment requires knowledge and skills which have been developed and passed on between generations, acquired through experience, and gained from technical and scientific sources. The allotment at City Road reflects Scotland’s heritage of communities involved in growing and sharing home grown produce.

For Doors Open Days visitors will be provided with a map to take a self-guided tour of the allotments, there will be children's activities, and a plant sale.
