Sorbie Tower
Dumfries and Galloway
Sorbie Tower lies in Wigtownshire, about a mile out of the village of Sorbie on the Garlieston road. It is situated close to an artificial defensive mound, known as the "Sorbie Motte" which was the site of an earlier pictish wooden fort dating from the 1100's. The visitor approaches the tower up an unmade track through damp, marshy ground, hence the origins of the 'Sorbie' name, a dwelling amongst swamps. The tower certainly is an imposing sight when it appears around the corner at the last moment.
A visit to Sorbie Tower will take our guests from the 12th century to the present day. They will be guided through the life and times of the tower and grounds. What life was like through the ages and how the tower and Clan Hannay fits in with both the local and national history . How to this day it acts as a beacon for Clan Hannay members from all corners of the world as they see the tower being restored to its former glory.
For Doors Open Days join the Clan Hannay Society and the Douglas Retinue for a medieval reenactment weekend! With a living history camp, authentic cooking, weapons and fighting all within the tower and grounds of the magnificent Sorbie Tower!
There will also be guided tours taking place around the tour and grounds at 11am and 2pm each day.
