St John’s Tower is the remaining bell tower from Ayr’s medieval Church of St John the Baptist- it is Ayr’s oldest building. Access to the tower will be facilitated by members of the Friends of St John’s Tower (FrOST) group.
The Whithorn Way is a recently mapped 143 mile walking and cycling route, following much of the ancient pilgrimage route from Glasgow Cathedral to Whithorn. This route was travelled by pilgrims for well over 1000 years, and the Church of St John the Baptist was a regular calling point along the way.

Additional Access Information
Access through the tower is via one narrow, winding staircase with over 100 steps. FrOST members try to manage the flow of visitors, but some congestion can still occur. Visitors should be mindful of low doorways throughout the building and overhanging slates on the parapet.
The tower is not suitable for people who suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia, and the climb to the top should only be attempted by those with a good level of fitness.
