Rothesay Pavilion
Argyll & Bute
Voted a top ten favourite Scottish building, Rothesay Pavilion is one of only a few Bauhaus inspired buildings built in the international modernist style in Scotland. Situated on the beautiful island of Bute, within easy commuting distance of Glasgow, it is a unique example of 1930’s seaside architecture. With its impressive cantilevered glass domed café area, deep balconies and sun terrace, the building is clearly visible from the ferry.
The entrance hall, elegant staircase and lift makes a range of new facilities accessible to all; a seafront gallery and exhibition space; studio theatre; ‘45RPM’ a multimedia suite for young people, new café operation, arts and design retail, leased office accommodation and workspace. The main hall encompasses the proscenium stage and a recessed, sprung dance floor that is reckoned to be second in scale to the famous Blackpool Tower ballroom!
The Pavilion restoration is possible due to the commitment and funds from a range of agencies: Argyll and Bute Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, The Scottish Government and The West Coast Foundation.
