Arrochar Parish Church
Argyll & Bute
Arrochar Parish Church was built in 1848 to replace the original church which was opened in 1733. The remains of this church can be seen in the graveyard. Within the building are several beautiful stained-glass windows dating from the late 19th Century to the early 21st Century.
Inside there are several stained-glass windows, some by noted artists, made between c.1870 and 2003. The pipe organ was installed c.1860 and refurbished in 2019. The bell and communion cups were bequeathed by Lady Helen Arbuthnot, the widow of the 19th Macfarlane Chieftain and mother of both the 20th and 21st Chieftains. The bell and communion cups are still in regular use.
One of our stained-glass windows features an image of St. Kessog, after whom our linked church at Luss is named. We shall explore the detail in the window and trace the story of St Kessog from his early childhood in Ireland to his martyrdom near Luss as well as the extent of his influence across Scotland as evidenced by placenames. St Kessog came to Scotland before St Columba was even born and is particularly associated with the spread of Christianity in this area. We will trace his journey from his home in Cashel in Munster via Strangford Lough to Loch Lomond and beyond.
There will be a continuous electronic presentation and printed information leaflets about St Kessog and his window. Church members will be present to answer any questions.
