St Vigeans Church
Angus
The historic and beautiful church at St Vigeans sits up on a grassy mound, skirted by a curve of attractively restored traditional cottages and bridges over the Brothock which flows through a tree lined valley to the town of Arbroath.
The Church was consecrated in 1242, although there is evidence of much earlier worship taking place at this site. Following excavations, when restoration work was being done, some fragments of bronze weapons, ornaments and carved stones were found. The carved stones are now housed in the village museum and are of some distinction.
The Church itself has some very interesting features with Consecration crosses cut into the masonry both inside and out. In addition, there are some very beautiful stained glass windows and monuments and tablets. A black marble tablet is dedicated to Sir Peter Young who was joint tutor with George Buchanan to King James V1.
Surrounding the Church there are some very old gravestones which may be of interest to some.
Music also plays an important part in the life of St Vigeans and the church had a Harrison of Durham organ installed in 1875, an unusually early date for a country church.
During Doors Open Days, visit the church where guides will be available if required or if you prefer you are welcome to just come in and browse on your own.
