‘Prehistory in the Garioch’ at Monymusk Hall

Mid-Grampian Mesolithic’s Doors Open event features an exhibition of the family friendly community archaeology group’s exploration of local evidence for early prehistory in the Mid-Don valley. There will be an exhibition about life here approximately 10,000 years ago, along with the evidence found for it. There is a hands-on Mesolithic map game and Playmobil landscape for children to build and explore. There will also be a slideshow of photographs and afternoon teas available.

1 High Shore is an original Merchant’s house in the centre of Banff, adjacent to the Silversmith’s House and the Market Arms; they are three of the oldest houses in Banff, forming a historic grouping. Opposite lies a medieval churchyard.

1940s Police Box

An Edinburgh police box with original interior fittings, commissioned in May 1933, as produced to the 1929 design of City Architect Ebenezer James MacRae to fulfil a modern, practical and technical function, whilst being styled to fit in with the city’s existing architecture. Set up with a display of contemporary artefacts to illustrate how the building was used as a part of the city-wide network to connect police officers and the public.

8 Doors Distillery in John O'Groats was established in 2022 by husband and wife Derek and Kerry Campbell, and is the most northerly distillery on the UK mainland. The distillery is producing the first Single Malt Scotch Whisky in that area since 1837. His Majesty, The King, officially opened the distillery on 2 August 2023. Whilst the team wait for their own Single malt to mature, they have released a range of independent small batch and single cask whisky bottlings under the brand name of 'Seven Sons'. The distillery has just also released its blended liqueur product called “Five Ways” - a smooth liqueur made with blended scotch whisky, hints of ginger, honey, orange and spices. Both products are available to buy in the distillery’s shop. The shop is in the distillery’s whisky lounge which is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a dram or coffee with a view.

Abbey Strand Centre, Holyrood

Sitting just outside of the gates of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Abbey Strand buildings have been witness to more than five centuries of Scottish history. They have seen many uses, including a weapons store during the reign of James V and a home to debtors inside the Abbey Sanctuary. Today, the Abbey Strand Centre is a place for learning, with a varied programme of school visits, workshops and lectures taking inspiration from the rich history of the Palace and surrounding area.

It’s situated within Dunfermline’s Heritage Quarter and is steeped in the rich history of Scotland’s ancient capital. The house is instantly recognisable by its colour and is known fondly as the ‘pink hoose’ by locals.

Come and find out about one of Aberdeen's oldest clubs. Founded in September 1933, The Bridge Club is celebrating it's 90th Anniversary this weekend. Though founded as a Bridge club, the building has been home to Aberdeen Scrabble Club for a number or years, and since 2018 has been the home of Bon Acord Chess Club.
