WHO COORDINATES DOORS OPEN DAYS IN RENFREWSHIRE?

Renfrewshire Abbey Drain

Suzi Mciver, Creative Events Producer, Renfrewshire Council

Renfrewshire (7th - 8th September)

Renfrewshire Council have been taking part in Doors Open Days for 27 years. Our events team manage this event as part of Renfrewshire’s Event Programme throughout the year including Paisley Halloween Festival, Sma Shot Day and The Spree Festival.

The challenge of coordinating Doors Open Days is engaging venues to take part – Renfrewshire is such a vast county with many venues to choose from across many towns and villages.

One of my favourite things about the Doors Open Days festival is the eye catching design of the brochure.

One of our highlights this year is the Abbey Drain, an imposing stone vaulted construction, that was rediscovered in the early 1990s and a wealth of fascinating historical detail has been found in the silt at the bottom of the drain.

Some of the interesting items discovered in the Abbey Drain include dice and gaming tokens, tuning pegs for musical instruments and lead seals from cloth which show that the abbey imported cloth from many parts of Europe including the Netherlands and Italy.

Visitors can be in with a chance to be lowered into the drain for a tour. Visit the Paisley.is website from mid August to find out how you can enter the ballot draw.
