WHO COORDINATES DOORS OPEN DAYS IN DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY?
Mick Macleod, Volunteer Coordinator
Dumfries and Galloway – 7th and 8th September 2019
I volunteered this year at a Museum’s Network Dumfries and Galloway meeting. Douglas McDavid, Scott Jones and Ken Smyth from Dumfries and Galloway are assisting me on Belhalf of the Network. I have been Secretary and a volunteer at the Creetown Heritage Museum for the last 3 years and am currently digitizing all of their documents and photographs. I also look after the Facebook page ‘Creetown Now and Then’.
This year is my first Doors Open Days, though I contacted Nicola Godsal in 2017 for Creetown Museum to take part that year. Dumfries and Galloway had no coordinator at the time.
For me, the best thing is meeting the folk who run the Museums, galleries and historic buildings throughout Dumfries and Galloway. They are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, which makes me feel good to be a part of this.
The biggest challenge was getting financial support. Thankfully, Mind the Gap Research and Training stepped in to support us. Hopefully next year, this will become easier now that we have proved our worth.
Persuading some of my personal favourite museums to take part this year was a particularly proud moment of mine this year.
When it comes to highlights this year I think it’s between the battle re-enactments planned at Sorbie Tower and the ‘Mostly Ghostly’ tours of the Crypt at Crichton Church.
